How to Make Time to Quilt While "Life" Happens!

The best tips for making time to quilt involve planning ahead, breaking down tasks, and making the most of small, available moments. Creating an efficient workspace and minimizing distractions are also key to maximizing your time.

Plan and schedule your quilting time
  • Book a "date" with yourself. Treat your quilting time like a scheduled appointment that you can't miss. Put it on your calendar and protect that time.
  • Establish a routine. Set a specific, recurring time each week for quilting, such as Sunday afternoon after chores are done. Making it a habit increases the likelihood that you'll stick with it.
  • Plan your project in advance. Before you start, read the pattern thoroughly and prepare your supplies. This prevents you from wasting valuable quilting time searching for missing items.
Maximize small pockets of time
  • Use timed sprints. Even a 15- to 20-minute window can be productive. Set a timer and focus completely on a single task, like cutting fabric or chain piecing.
  • Work in batches. Tackle similar tasks all at once to increase efficiency. For instance, do all your cutting in one session, all your sewing in another, and all your pressing in a third.
  • Save mindless tasks for low-focus times. Reserve repetitive tasks, such as chain piecing or hand appliqué, for evening hours when your focus may be lower. Use your most alert time of day for complex tasks like precise cutting.
Streamline your workspace and process
  • Organize your sewing space. Keeping your work area tidy and organized saves you from hunting for tools. Put away your tools and scraps after each session to make your next one more seamless.
  • Use time-saving tools. The right notions, like a Stripology ruler or trimming templates, can make common tasks much faster.
  • Leave a project ready to go. Before finishing a session, prepare for your next one. Leave your fabric cut or your machine threaded so you can start sewing immediately next time.
  • Clean surfaces regularly. A tidy workspace prepares your mind and helps you be more productive. Clear flat surfaces at the end of each session to make a clean start for the next one.
Manage your energy and expectations
  • Don't compare yourself to others. Remember that everyone quilts at a different pace. Focus on your own progress and celebrate your own accomplishments.
  • Start small. If you're new or short on time, begin with smaller projects like runners, placemats, or pillows. This builds momentum and confidence, which can motivate you for larger quilts later.
  • Give yourself grace. It's okay if you can't quilt every day. Some weeks are busier than others, and that's normal. Be flexible and forgiving of yourself.
  • Listen to a podcast or audiobook. Since you can't easily read while quilting, listen to an audiobook or podcast to "double dip" and enjoy another hobby while you work.

Happy Quilting!! XOXO ~Tabatha
